WordPress connected to an AI agent through MCP with Novamira

Connecting WordPress to AI with Novamira (free version)

Novamira is an open-source WordPress plugin that lets an AI agent work directly inside your site. Not a chatbot that suggests code for you to paste, but an assistant that can read your real setup and make changes on it, while you review every step.

I use it with Claude Code to maintain this site. Here is what the free version offers and how to connect it safely.

How the connection works

Novamira turns your WordPress site into an MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI clients use external tools. Your AI client connects straight to your site over HTTPS, signs in with a WordPress Application Password or OAuth, and gets a set of abilities: run PHP, run WP-CLI, read the database, edit files and more.

The connection is direct. Novamira is not a hosted proxy, so your requests never pass through its servers.

5 advantages of the free version

1. Real work, not suggestions

The agent runs PHP and WP-CLI against your actual plugins, theme and database. What it builds is tested on your site, not guessed from a generic example.

2. A direct, private connection

Your AI client talks to your WordPress installation with nothing in between. You keep control of your site and your data.

3. Works with the AI you already use

Claude, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, VS Code with GitHub Copilot and other MCP clients. Terminal agents like Claude Code can connect with the Novamira CLI.

4. Safety nets built in

Abilities are off until you enable them, only administrators can use them, and new PHP files go to a sandbox with automatic recovery if something breaks.

5. Open source and free

The plugin is licensed under AGPL, with public code, documentation and an active community on Discord and GitHub. A paid Pro plan adds extras such as memory for your agent, but the core connection is free.

Connect it in three steps

  1. Download the release ZIP from novamira.ai and upload it in Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
  2. Activate it, open Novamira → Configuration and enable AI Abilities.
  3. Follow the instructions for your AI client and sign-in method.

You need WordPress 6.9 or later, PHP 8.0 or later, an administrator account and HTTPS for remote connections.

What I use it for

  • SEO audits: titles, meta descriptions, alt text and broken links
  • Performance: page caching, browser caching and loading scripts only where they are needed
  • Content and layout changes in Elementor and the block editor
  • Checking plugins and settings before and after updates

Good practices

  • Start on a staging site and keep backups. Novamira itself recommends it.
  • Create a dedicated administrator user with its own Application Password, so you can revoke it at any time.
  • Review every action before you approve it. The agent can do anything PHP can.
  • When you update plugins, update Novamira first. Plugins that ship their own MCP features can break the connection if Novamira is out of date.
